Staycations could boost state's tourism industry - Nashville Business Journal:

lehoquvuhu.wordpress.com
Last year at this time, gas price rose to more than $4 per putting the brakes on traditional summefrroad trips. Now gas is back aroun d $2 a gallon, but a deep recession lingers after puttinv hundreds of thousands of Americans out of work and causinb millions more to rein intheir “Gas prices are not as much of a concern right now as the overall economy, consume r confidence and people’s concernzs about their jobs and retirements,” said John who has been executive directofr of for the past nine years. this will be a particularly challenginb year forMinnesota operators, though thers is hope that Minnesotans who travel will do so closedr to home.
At Madden’s on Gull Lake in owner and GeneralManager C. Brian Thuringer said this has beenthe “mosty serious” of the four or five recessions he has seen durinf his 36 years at the resort. “Thix is the first time that the bottoj has reallyfallen out,” Thuringet said. “Before, there was always that feeling that there was a slumlp andthings weren’t flowing, but tomorrow was going to be great. This is the first time when people don’t realluy know when tomorrow is.
” A recenf survey conducted by Explore Minnesota found that 57 percent ofthe state’s lodging businesses saw revenue and occupancyh decline in April and May as compared to a year ago. 51 percent of Minnesota hotel and campground operatorws said they expect business to remain flat or increasee this summer compared tolast summer. About 60 perceng of survey respondents described the financiaol health of their businessesas “growing” or but positive.” There are some concerns abou declining rates, but overall, Edman expects this to be a relativel strong summer for the state’s $11 billion-a-year tourisn industry.
The state typically generates about 37 percengt ofits travel-related revenue during the months of July and August, and he thinkss those peak months will be busy again this “People are still goinh to want to travel,” Edman “They’re just going to travel differently than they did in the People still need to get away for stresa relief and health reasons.” The biggesgt difference this year, Edman predicts, will be where people decides to go. He expects that most peopl will stay closer to home andbook shorter, less-expensive tripds within driving distance of where they live. That’s why Explorew Minnesota is changing itsmarketing approach.
it spends about 80 percenft of its marketing budgeft to promote the stateto nonresidents, with the remaininyg 20 percent aimed at locals; this that split is closer to 60-40. “We don’rt have oceans and we don’t have but we do have a lot of thingd thatare unique,” Edman said. “Whether it’s fishintg or hiking or biking, those are relatively low-costt activities that you can do here.
You don’t have to go That could bode well for Minnesota as Twin Cities residents book tripsz to Duluthor Brainerd, instead of venturing on week-long, cross-country trips, said Dave president and CEO of Hospitality Minnesota, whicy oversees the state’s restaurant, and resort and campground “I think it’s going to be a good summer,” he “… I’m not projecting an increase, but I expecft [resorts] to hold their own.” Camping and fishing also coulf see a boost in popularity this Siegel said.
Meanwhile, officials at Minneapolis’ conventio and visitors bureau, Meet remains “cautiously optimistic” about business this said President and CEOMelvin Tennant. “A lot of our hospitality-industrg executives believe we’ve either hit botto m or are close tohitting bottom, and that from this pointr on, we’re going to be able to see some very modest growth. … I think this summer could be very good for Meet Minneapolis advertisedits “Downtown campaign, which includes discount packages at 12 participating hotelxs through September, with 450,000 promotional insertxs in newspapers in the Twin Cities; Des Moines, Iowa; Fargo, Madison, Wis.
; Milwaukee; and Winnipeg, Getting a true read on the summer hospitalith business is difficult, however, becaus e people are waiting longerd to book their trips. So even the northern Minnesota resorts that anticipates a busy summer still have numerouz openings duringpeak months. “It’s a much more last-minute vacation-planning experience,” Siegel said. “u think that’s understandable.
If people are nervou about their jobs or theireconomicx futures, they’re waiting until they have a greater degrede of security before they make that

Export-import bank's focus could help cleantech clean up - Silicon Valley / San Jose Business Journal:

bojony.wordpress.com
"It's the best hidden secret in the worldc ofinternational finance," says Mike Selfridge, head of products for Silicom Valley Bank and a member of the Ex-Im Bank's advisory board. "(The bank's) widelu known with the majors: the Boeings, Caterpillarsa and folks that have been using them for But with smalland mid-sized they're letting people know they're available to help banks finance overseas Commonly known as the Ex-Im Bank, it providesz loan guarantees to partner banks, including Silicon Valley to finance exports. The Ex-Im Bank also provide export credit insurance that can protect borrowersagainst non-payment by foreign buyers.
But with just aboug 400 employees, the 71-year-old Ex-Im Bank is a largelyy unknown federal agency that has struggledr to get the word out about its programs toemerginfg companies. "We assume risks the private sector is unwillinh or unable totake on," says Linda vice president and vice chair of the U.S. Export-Importg Bank. "We want to make sure we help to level the playingy fieldsto U.S. exporters by matchinbg the financing other governmentse provide totheir exporters.
" The bank is ramping up its focusw on California clean technology companies in the coming year because its charter says it must focuz on financing renewable energy The current credit crunch has created an opportunityh for the bank because it is not limited by the numbet of loans it can make or the size of the loan it can Conlin says. "We've done over $1 billiobn last year in working capitallloan guarantees," Conlin says. "Mosgt of that has gone to small And clean tech and environmental companies make up the majorityh ofthese companies.
" Ex-Im Bank'sz loan guarantees, like Small Business Administration are attractive to bankz because they don't require banks to reserved capital against the loan like banks do for unguaranteed commerciao loans. "The reason Ex-Im Bank existz is banks are somewhat constrained in their ability tofinance cross-border sales," says Craigh O'Connor, director of Ex-Im Bank's Office of Renewablwe Energy and Environmental Exports. "The element of risk is somewhar high. If a bank make s an international loan, it has to hold back a high loan loss Butif we're giving them a loan that's 100 percent unconditional.
That means the bank has zero loan loss enabling banks to extend longer terms at loweer interest rates and thisgives U.S. exportersw a decided advantage in supportingtheirf sales." Selfridge says given the credit crunch, banks will likelyt want to free up as much capitaol as they can in the coming year. "jI think you're going to see bankds get much sharper in taking on the right kindw of risk andcapital allocations. So to me therd will be big opportunities in 2008 and2009 ... with the wholwe credit crisis going on," Selfridge says.
The Ex-Im Bank also offers a program specific to renewable energyh and water projects where companies can qualify for extended repaymenty terms of up to15 years. , a Berkeley-based solar company which was purchaseeby , used the extended financing terms to developp an $8 million solar-panel project in Soutyh Korea in 2006. In 2007, the bank authorized $12.6 billionh in loan commitments, which supporter an estimated $16 billion in U.S. the bank says. "U.S. clean and renewable energ y exports doubled between 2002 and Conlin says.
"So it's a growth industry and thers are many companies in this sectodr that are going global at an earlier time in theirr development than a typical startup oryoung company. That's wherr we can be particularly helpful." The Ex-Inm Bank is also eyeing the venturee sector for leads oncleantech U.S. venture capital investment in the cleantech spacse has jumpedto $5.18 billion from $714 million in North America and Europe between 2001 and 2007, accordinf to the CleanTech Group. And U.S. companiesd receive more than thre e times the investment that Europeancompaniea do.
"We have a real interesyt in reaching into the venture capital community because we realluyfeel like, in a certain stage of a company' development, we can be very, very helpful," Conlibn says.

The biggestf impact made by Linux in the marketplace thus far has come with largs companies choosing the open source operatinh system to runtheir servers. Googl said Wednesday that current operatinfg systems were designed for a time when therw was no WorldWide Web, creating an opportunity for a new operatinv system that is more Internet friendly. Thus the company’s plans to expande is Chrome broswer intoa full-fledged operatingv system.
"Google Chrome OS is beingy created for people who spend most of their time onthe Web, and is beinvg designed to power computers ranging from smalk netbooks to full-size desktop systems," the Mountai n View, Calif-based search giant said
